History of the Internet

Who Invented the Internet?

What is the Internet?

Difference between Internet & WWW(world wide web)?

All Questions related to the Internet is explained below.

Internet and world wide web (WWW) are basically two different things but the term is often used together as they are connected. As without Internet connection you cannot access WWWURLs ex.www.friend.com I have seen people who get confused and they assume that the Internet and world  wide web are the same things

.I will try to explain it in Layman’s terms as easily as possible. It's like a book with many pages, to read the pages of the book you have to buy the book. This means to access all the information Published on the server you have to buy permission i. e  Internet connection from the service provider and once you have the connection you can access all the information published worldwide  News, e-mails, Blogs, etc.

The history of the Internet video taught me three things I did not ...
Internet Timeline

What is the full form of the INTERNET?

The full form of INTERNET is an Interconnected network of web servers worldwide.

What is the Internet?

In simple language, The internet means basically when millions of computers are connected by thousands of networks worldwide.

The Internet means a global network where the whole world’s computers can be connected & can be accessed for many purposes.

EX: Suppose A is a child in America and B is a child in India, If A is good in technology and makes a blog related to technology and B is good in maths and he makes a blog related to maths solving easy tricks and both of them publishes it on the Internet. They can see each other's Blogs if the they know proper URL address with the help of an Internet connection. If no Internet then they can’t access the information.

World wide web

What is the Full form of WWW?What does it do?

The full form of WWW is World wide web.

What is the definition of WWW?

The web is also referred to formally as the World Wide Web (WWW) It means a collection of information that is accessed with the help of the Internet.
It also means the Internet is the medium to get connected to the world's servers.
Another way to look at this difference is:

The Internet is the source or medium to get connected while the Web is the service that we get after getting connected to the world wide web. They are basically billions of pages that are created by billions of computer users which can be accessed through the internet when you are online or connected to billions of computers worldwide. A collection of related web pages could be accessed usually the Main page of the website; usually, the first page is accessed very often.

What is the History of the Internet?

Many people have heard that the Internet began with some military computers in the Pentagon called Arpanet in 1969. The theory goes on to suggest that the network was designed to survive a nuclear attack. However, whichever definition of what the Internet is we use, neither the Pentagon nor 1969 hold up as the time and place the Internet was invented.

A project which began in the Pentagon that year, called Arpanet, gave birth to the Internet protocols sometime later (during the 1970s), but 1969 was not the Internet's beginnings. Surviving a nuclear attack was not Arpanet's motivation, nor was building a global communications network.

ARPANET First Router

What is the full form of ARPANET

What was it used for? What role does it play in the History of the Internet?

The full form of ARPANET is the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET)

Bob Taylor, the Pentagon official who was in charge of the Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (or Arpanet) program, said that the purpose to invent the Internet was not military, but scientific.

The nuclear attack theory was never part of the design. Nor was the  Internet it was a part of the Pentagon's 1969 thinking. Larry Roberts, who was employed by Bob Taylor to build the Arpanet network, said that Arpanet was never intended to link people or be in the communications and information facility.

He said that Arpanet was always about time-sharing task sharing. They wanted to share Time & tasks they tried to make it possible for research institutions to use the processing power of other institutions computers when they had large calculations to do that required more power, or more concentration for accuracy when someone else's facility might do the job better.
so The first computers were connected in 1969 at Arpanet and the Network Control Program was implemented in 1970.

They also stated that What Arpanet did in 1969 was also important as it was to develop a variation of a technique called packet switching. In 1965, before Arpanet came into existence, an Englishman called Donald Davies had proposed a similar facility to Arpanet in the United Kingdom, the NPL Data Communications Network.

It never got funded; but Donald Davies did develop the concept of packet switching, a means by which messages can travel from point to point across a network. Although others in the USA were working on packet switching techniques at the same time (notably Leonard Kleinrock and Paul Baran),  Arpanet first adopted the U.K version

As a military venture, Arpanet had a specific military motivation for creating the internet: it offered a way to bring computers in front and promoted the usages i.e everyone should use computers it bought it to the front lines. In 1969, Arpa had built a computer network called Arpanet.

Who was connected or had access to ARPANET in 1960?

What role did Arpanet play in the Internet Timeline?

ARPANET  linked mainframes at universities, government agencies, and defense contractors around the country. The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.

Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network Many people have heard that the Internet began with some military computers in the Pentagon called Arpanet in 1969. The theory goes on to suggest that the network was designed to survive a nuclear attack.

When & Where was the Internet concept proposed & distributed?

Internet was first proposed in the early 1960s in California in the United States And it was proposed by Paul Baron who distributed networks based on data in message blocks.

The initial idea of the Internet was given by Leonard Kleinrock after he published his first paper entitled “Information Flow At large communication Nets” on May 31, 1961.

Who gave the idea to create a Network?

When & who had the idea of ARPANET?

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider became the first director of IPCO  and gave his revolutionary vision of a galactic network. He shared the idea with Licklider and Kleinrock, Robert Taylor they helped him to create the idea of the network that later it was named as ARPANET.

When was the first meeting held for the Initial creation?

Who invented the host provider? What role did it play in the History of the Internet?

In 1968 Elmer Shapiro, at the SRI (Stanford Research Institute) introduced  NWG (Network working group held its first meeting, chaired by  Other attendees which included Steve Carr, Steve crocker Jeff Rulifson, and Ron Stoughton. In the meeting, the group discussed How can they solve the problem related to getting host providers which can help them to establish connections to communicate all around the world.

In December 1968, Elmer Shapiro with SRI released a report "A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters." Based on this and earlier work by Paul Barens, Thomas Marill & others, Lawrence Roberts, and Barry Wessler created the IMP (Interface Message Processor) specifications. BBN (Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc.) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP subnetwork.

When was the Internet introduced to the General public?

On July 3,1969 The UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) published a press release introducing the public to the great achievement. The news was about the Internet where from now on their computer can get access to the world and Each and every information can be reached within seconds.

Network connectivity

Which was the First network equipment ever launched?

The first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called "IMP" (Interface Message Processor) was sent to UCLA. On 29th August 1969. Though it was not perfect it is still the first who made History. The network equipment that we use now has gone through many changes.

When did the First data ever transfer on the Internet?

The first data ever moved on the Internet was On September 2, 1969, from the UCLA host to the switch. It could be seen in many pictures is Leonard Kleinrock next to the IMP
.

When was the first message sent through the Internet?

The first Internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory at UCLA, And he sent it to a computer at SRI. On, October 29, 1969, at 10:30 p.m.The 1st attempt was not successful but the other attempt was successful.

Who distributed the 1st message in the Internet

When was the 1st message sent In the History of the Internet?

Charlie S.Kline sent the 1st message which was LO distributed, It was an attempt at LOGIN, by Charlie S.Kline to log into the SRI computer from UCLA. But it was undelivered because the SRI system crashed. Then he made the next attempt which was successful.

Who Introduced E-mails and When was it introduced In the Internet timeline?

The revolutionary Invention of Email was developed by Ray By Thomlison who sends the 1st Network Email in 1971. It's the first messaging system to send messages across a network to other users. After this successful attempt Email became the fastest way of communication.

When & why was software launched?

The Software was launched for establishing links between network sites in the ARPANET. It was the Network Control Program (NCP), that was completed in 1970. In between many experiments were done then after

Furthermore development in the early 1970s by Robert E. Kahn and Vinton Cerf and who let to the formulation of the Transmission Control Program and its specification which was held in December 1974 in RFC 675. This work also coined the terms catenet (concatenated network) and the Internet as It was a contraction of internet working, which describe the interconnection of multiple networks.

Vinton cerf and Robert Kahn

When was TCP developed?

In 1973 Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn design TCP The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the main protocols of the Internet protocol suite.

Who Invented the Internet?

As Vinton Cerf & Robert Kahn introduced the main Internet Protocol suit they are considered as Internet Inventors.

TCP was published in December 1974  with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in RFC 675.

When was the First commercial network introduced in the History of the Internet?

In 1974 ARPANET commonly known as Telenet was introduced & It was also considered 1st ISP( internet service provider.

What is Ethernet & Who introduced the idea of Ethernet in Internet history?

It is a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, LAN  with an intention to control the passing of information and to avoid data transmission by two or more systems. It was the most widely used method of linking computers together in LANs since the 1990s. The basic idea of its design is that multiple computers have access to it and can send data at any time.

In 1973 Bob Metcalfe developed the idea of Ethernet. It really helped to get access or supply Internet connection to multiple computers.

Modem

What is Internet  Modem & When was The modem introduced?

modem is a small device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves.

What is the full form of MODEM?

The full form of Modem is modulator-demodulator. It is a combined device for modulation and demodulation.

In 1977 Dennis Hayes and Dale Heatherington released the 80-103 modem  The Modem and their subsequent modems become a popular choice for All users who could now access the Internet.

What is TCP/IP? Why was TCP/IP used for? What is the full form of TCP/IP?

TCP/IP, or the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, is a suite of communication protocols used to interconnect network devices on the internetTCP/IP can also be used as a communications protocol in a private computer network That we use in the office Intranet or an Extranet.

Who created TCP/IP & When was TCP Introduced in the Internet History?

IN 1978 TCP splits into TCP/IP driven by Danny cohen David Reed and  John Soch

Why TCP/IP was created? Why was TCP created in the internet timeline?

It was created to support real-time traffic on the Internet The creation of TCP/IP helped create UDP and is later it got standardized into ARPANET on New year's day 1983 i.e 1st January 1983 ., TCP/IP is no longer used by many people.

What is DNS? What is the full form of DNS? Who is introduced DNS?

The Full form of DNS is Domain Name System (DNS)
It basically keeps the record of the directory of domain names and then translates them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

This was necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, But computers or machines, don’t understand our language as they have a machine or Binary language so it could access websites based on IP addresses on the Internet as the IP addresses are converted into machine languages.

The Web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load whatever the user requires on the Internet. And we can see it Each device connected to the Internet has a unique IP address which other machines use to find the device.

Some of the most high-performance DNS public resolvers and their IPv4 DNS addresses include used are given below:

Cisco OpenDNS: 208.67. 222.222 and 208.67. 220.220;
Cloudflare 1.1. 1.1: 1.1. 1.1 and 1.0. 0.1;
Google Public DNS: 8.8. 8.8 and 8.8. 4.4;

Who introduced DNS to the world?

In 1984 Paul Mockapetris and John postel introduced DNS to the world which also introduces the domain name system

Which was the 1st Internet Domain name Registered & When?

The first Internet domain name, was symbolics.com & It was registered on March 15 1985 by Symbolics.

Where was the 1st Internet Domain name Invented?

It was done in  Massachusetts computer company in the United States.

What is the First commercial dial-up ISP?

In November 1989.in Brookline, Massachusetts, The World became the first commercial ISP in the US. Its first customer was served as The first commercial(ISP) Internet service provider These companies generally offered dial-up connections,It was basically done by using the public telephone network i.e telephone connecting wires to provide last-mile connections to their customers wherever the customer is located.

What is the full form of HTML? Who developed it & why?

HTML.full form is Hypertext Markup Language. It was  First developed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990, while working at CERN Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML
.
HTML was used to create electronic documents or web pages, Blog pages (called pages) that are displayed on the World Wide Web. Each page contains a series of connections to other pages called hyperlinks It allows the user to create and a proper page by including paragraphs, headings, links, and block quotes for web pages and applications.

For example, we can create a paragraph by placing the enclosed text within a starting <p> and closing </p> tag.
Developing HTML was a  huge contribution to the world as it made it easy to navigate and view it in the  Internet HTML  pages are even used today.

When was the 1st website developed? Who Developed It?

The first website was developed was  info.cern.ch, which was developed by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN and he published it online on August 6th, 1991.

Who Introduced WWW to the public?

On 6th August 1991, introduced WWWto the General public.

When was WWWbecame available to the general Public?

WWW became available to the general public on 23 August 1991.

The WWW is what most people today consider the "Internet" or a series of sites and pages that are connected with links.

The Internet had hundreds of people who helped develop the standards and technologies that we use today, but without the WWW, the Internet would not be as popular as it is today. We should also thank to those who research on many searchable topics and they upload it in the Internet Publish it in the Internet to keep us updated they inform us what is happening all around the world.

Les Horrible Cernettes

When was the first Photo or Image sent through the World wide web? Who sent the photo?

In 1992, Berners-Lee needed a photo to be tested whether he could sent a photo across out in the WorldWide Web's for that he needed new image-hosting capabilities in the Internet. An IT developer shot a photograph of a comedy band Les Horribles Cernettes, which was comprised of other CERNemployees at the Swiss lab where they worked  When the picture was uploaded, it made history as the first image ever shared on the Web.

Who created 1st search Engine for the Internet browsing & When?

In 1992 Archie The first tool used for searching content (as opposed to users) on the Internet was Archie.
The name stands for "archive" without the "v". It was basically created by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan & J. Peter Deutsch, They were computer science students at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Archie basically manually the program downloaded the directory listings of all the files located on public anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites, creating a searchable database of file names; Archie Search Engine did not index the contents of these sites since the amount of data or the web pages were very limited it could be readily searched manually.

When was the First graphical Internet browser introduced to the world?

on April 22, in 1993 in NCSA with the help of Marc Andreessen and ERIC  Bina introduced
Mosaic the first widely-used graphical World Wide Web browser.

Later Netscape A big competitor to Mosaic also gave his contribution to the world which was released a year later. the lesser-known Erwise and Viola WWW was developed.
Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign beginning in late 1992.

When did the Internet become popular?

Internet became popular mostly via the World Wide Web (WWW) after there were enough content and many users who used WWW browsers (to browse content) and above all search engines (to find content).  The amount of content and global use of WWW and the internet gave a huge boost starting from 1995–1996.

How did Internet users Increase in the 1990s to the early 2000s and till Today?

In the 1990s There were not enough Internet users or so of the public Internet, But Nokia changed the thinking, Nokia Introduced a phone with internet capabilities in 1996 which revolutionized the usage of the Internet. As it could be used anywhere anyhow & anytime.
The immense changes When mobile cellular devices the smart phones were launched ("smartphones" and other cellular devices) which today provides near-universal access, It was used for business, routine household item It was owned by everyone owned by parents, children, vendors and others worldwide.

Social media like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, etc also left their mark as this was also the reason for huge Internet users in the modern sense It kept people connected and so it was very popular laptops were bulky and most households did not have computers. so smart phones captured the Market.
Data rates were slow and most people lacked the means to video or digitize video; media storage was transitioning slowly from analog tape to digital optical discs (DVD and to an extent still, floppy disc to CD).

Enabling technologies used from the early 2000s such as PHP, modern JavaScript and Java, technologies such as AJAX, HTML 4 (and its emphasis on CSS), and various software frameworks, which enabled & they simplified kit to understand the technology they also enhanced the speed of web development, The internet connection also has speed like 2g,3g etc so people largely awaited for  inventions and their eventual widespread adoptions took place fast.
Before the Internet was widely used for mailing lists, emails, e-commerce and early popular online shopping (Amazon.com and eBay.in etc), online forums and bulletin boards, and personal websites and blogs, and use was growing rapidly.

But by more modern standards the systems used were static and lacked widespread social engagement. It awaited a number of events in the early 2000s to change from a communications technology to gradually develop into a key part of the global world's infrastructure. Now smartphones are in every Nook & corner of the world with lots of technology Softwares & Facilities like cameras, worksheets, PPT It can be used to watch movies hear songs can be used as torchlights, can be used to play games, etc and it is either inbuilt or downloaded by Google play for better performance.
